🀍 Preparing for Your Newborn Shoot

First things first… please don’t worry about preparing loads for your newborn session! πŸ₯°

I have all the little outfits, wraps and props we’ll need at the studio, and I don’t expect you to do anything in particular before you arrive.

Newborn sessions are very much led by your baby β€” we’ll take our time, stop for feeds and cuddles whenever needed, and work at their pace. 🀍

That said, there are a few little things that can help everything run smoothly and give us the best chance of creating those gorgeous newborn images. ✨

🏑 Having a Home Visit?

If your newborn session is taking place at home, please have the room we’ll be shooting in lovely and warm before I arrive. 🌑️

It might feel a little too warm for us grown-ups, but keeping the room cosy helps baby stay comfortable and relaxed when they’re being changed, wrapped or photographed in just their nappy.

A warm, snuggly baby is usually a much happier baby! πŸ₯°

🍼 Feeding Baby

Be prepared that your little one may want to feed a little more than usual during their session.

Newborn photography is hungry work! πŸ˜†

A little top-up between photographs can work wonders for settling baby back into a lovely sleepy state, so we’ll always allow plenty of time for feeding, winding and cuddles.

There is absolutely no rush. 🀍

πŸ‘œ A Few Things to Bring

You really don't need to bring much more than you normally would when heading out with baby, but a few things can be particularly handy:

🧸 Baby's usual essentials β€” nappies, wipes, bottles/formula if needed, spare clothes and anything else you'd usually take out with you.

🀍 A blanket from home β€” please bring one of baby's own blankets with you.

πŸ‘Ά A dummy β€” if your baby uses one, these can come in very handy for gently settling them between photographs.

🧸 Something special β€” you're very welcome to bring a favourite teddy, cuddly toy or sentimental item you'd love included in a photograph.

Don't worry if you don't have anything special you'd like to bring β€” I have everything we need! ✨

✨ Little Details

These are completely optional, but there are a couple of tiny details you may want to check before your session.

πŸ’‡β€β™€οΈ Hair β€” if you have a preference for how baby's hair sits, you may want to bring a little baby brush. The same goes for yourselves if you're having family photographs!

πŸ‘£ Tiny fingers & toes β€” have a quick look at baby's fingernails and toenails beforehand and make sure you're happy with how they look.

πŸ‘ Grown-up hands too! β€” it's worth making sure your own fingernails are clean and tidy.

Even if you're not planning on having traditional family photographs, I love capturing those beautiful little detail shots of baby in Mum or Dad's hands. They're such a lovely way of showing just how tiny your newborn once was. πŸ₯ΉπŸ€

πŸ‘— What Should We Wear?

If you're having family photographs, keeping things simple and timeless works beautifully.

Try to avoid very busy patterns, large logos and particularly bold colours such as bright red or electric blue. These can distract from baby and can sometimes reflect unwanted colour onto your skin in photographs.

🀎 Colours that photograph beautifully:

🀍 Cream & white
🀎 Tan, camel & brown
πŸ–€ Black
πŸ’™ Navy
🌿 Soft, earthy neutrals

You don't all need to wear exactly the same colour β€” coordinating rather than completely matching usually looks much more natural.

🌿 Fancy a Little Colour?

You definitely don't have to stick entirely to neutrals!

Soft, pale and muted shades can look gorgeous when coordinated together. Think:

🩡 Denim & dusty blues
🌿 Olive & sage greens
🌸 Dusky pinks
🀎 Warm earthy tones
🀍 Soft creams & beige

If you're struggling for inspiration, searching β€œfamily photoshoot outfits” on Pinterest can give you some lovely ideas. ✨

πŸ“Έ One Less Thing to Worry About...

Family photographs during your newborn session are usually taken from around the tummy upwards, so there's no need to stress about shoes or perfectly coordinating everyone's footwear! πŸ˜†

Your feet generally won't be making an appearance.

Most importantly, choose something that you feel comfortable and confident in. 🀍

πŸ₯° And Finally...

Please don't put pressure on yourself β€” or baby β€” for everything to go perfectly.

Newborn sessions include feeds, cuddles, nappy changes, little accidents and plenty of settling. That's completely normal and all part of the session.

We'll follow baby's lead and take our time.

You just need to bring your gorgeous new little person along, get comfortable and let me take care of the rest. 🀍✨

I can't wait to capture this incredibly special stage for you. πŸ₯ΉπŸ“Έ
